Sometimes I see responses to a friend's post from people I think it would interesting to know moew about. I head over to their journal and find out that it is for friends only. Some mention it in the one open post, others you go to the calendar and see they have posts, but nothing when you look at the journal. I totally respect that it is their journal and what they decide to do with it. What I usually feel is sad because I dont have the guts to just add them even though I know I wont see anything to let them know I am interested. If I had the guts I would email them and say something along the lines of I read your comments to so-and-so's journal or your posts to the so-and-so community and find your words very enlightening. I wish to learn more about you and maybe become friends. Would you let me in? I just dont have the guts to do something like that. I am almost certain it would come across as pushy or whiny.

Oh well, have to head back to work

I don't think what you just said is pushy or whiny. I added a new person today and I'm the shyer of the two of us. I don't think anybody would turn down your request. And if they did they are definately missing out on something. I may be biased but that's my two cents.

Same here - I've emailed people before, introduced myself, and got added right away. :)

I've encountered that before, and usually just forget it. It actually never occurred to me to email them, I guess I just assumed since I wasn't a friend now, I wouldn't be able to read their journal. :) One exception is when someone whose journal I'd been reading for a while said she was going friend's only, I emailed her and said I really enjoyed her journal and would really like to be added to her friends list so I could keep reading, and she added me right away. I say go for it, if you want to read their journal.
