Yeah, on the front page they have a link to the LJ Maintenance post that explained what happened (http://www.livejournal.com/community/lj_maintenance/109755.html). When they moved their servers, they changed the IP address, and ended up accidentally getting blacklisted as a spammer, which took them several weeks to clear up.
The mail servers kept trying to send mail, which was getting blocked, and cued to send again, ect, so when the blacklist was removed, the queues started clearing out, presumably including redundant mailings that were happening.
