Some places (like UofL) take over a month to even get someone to the interview process. It doesn't hurt to start sending them say in Sept 1 range so that by the time you get the call saying "when can you start?" it's close enough to Nov 30 that it's not a bad thing. My .02 because it took 3 months for me to get a job the last time I was "downsized".
