More about Yesterday
Jul. 12th, 2006 08:16 amI left Lexington about 2:30 and got to the Zoo about 4pm. The gates close at 5pm and you have to leave the zoo by 6pm. It was not crowded at all which was very nice. I had a couple of things I specifically wanted to do and had brought in alittle bit of cash to do it. The first thing I did was get a train ticket and ride that around the zoo. It was alittle disappointing due to the fact that the tracks basically just went around the zoo and behind most of the exhibits. The breeze was nice and the tunnels were interesting. Just not something I want to do every time. Maybe once a year or so.
After the train ride I headed down to see the Snow Leopard on my way to Lorikeet Landing. She was out and about. Was nice to see her moving some and not just sleeping like the Jaguar. *grins* I stayed there alittle bit and then started to wander down to the Lorikeets. I passed the Macaw cage and heard them squawking up a storm. They were inside their 'house'. I suddenly got to see exactly why they were making such raucous. A squirrel came out of the house with some food and sat there on the ledge eating. Then it jumped back inside and stole some more of the Macaw's food. *giggles* Silly squirrel.
I moved on and got to the Lorikeet Landing and the Wallaby Walkabout area. I went along the path in the walkabout area and got to see some of the animals there. I then went into the Lorikeet's cage after purchasing some nectar for them. IT was so COOL!!! At one point I had 3 Lorikeets on me. Of course I got pooped on. *grins* I have only been in the lorikeet's area once before and the same handler was there yesterday who was there last month. He looked and me and was like you have been here before right? I said only once. Last time no birds would land on me. He then asked me if I had parrots because I was doing so well with the birds.I answered no because with having 4 cats it would not be good to have birds.
It was now alittle after 5pm and I went out and wandered alittle bit more. I went back by the Snow Leopard cage. She was pacing alittle. She got right up into the front corner so she was about 3 feet from me. *sighs* I 'conversed' with her for alittle bit and then she went back to laying down. I then went over to the American Cat area which has the Lynx, the Cougar and the Bald Eagles. Got to watch one of the Bald Eagles drink some water, and the other one was eating a mouse. At about this time some of the rain started as a gentle sprinkle.
I started back toward the entrance and went by a couple of more cages before I got to the gift shop. I went in and was going to purchase a couple of things. I did not remember that I only brought in a small amount of cash and did not have the debit card on me. I ended up only getting some postcards for Caritas. I also asked about the Snow Leopard cage and when was it going to be updated? One worker was like she has been wondering that herself. The other suggested I call or ask at the office next time I come in. She also mentioned that the handlers who put on the sea lion and seal shows are the ones who take care of the snow leopards. I thanked them and then headed out. Just as I got to my car the skies opened up and the thunderstorms began. I got so LUCKY!
